Sharden Sammons, 79 of Tornado, WV, went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 15, 2024 in the Charleston Area Medical Center. He was born December 1, 1944 in Kermit, WV the son of the late Effie Sammons Messer. Sharden served in the United States Army and the West Virginia Army National Guard for a total of 26 years of service. He is a long-time member of the St. Albans American Legion Post 73, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6418, and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 37 having joined in 2016. In 1998 he became a member at Large with the Disabled American Veterans and became a settled member of the Kanawha Chapter in 2016. He was stationed in Germany 1962 to 1965. This was at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was again in Germany in 1969 through 1970. He served in Vietnam 1970 to 1971 in the 101st Airborne Division. He served in the West Virginia Army National Guard from 1973 to 1977 and from 1977 to 1984 he served active duty as the Mobilization NCO for the National Guard. From 1984 to 1991 he again served as Guardsman in the West Virginia Army National Guard and then retired. He attained the rank of Sargent First Class (E7). Sharden “Rock” Sammons also served as 2023 St. Albans Veterans Parade Grand Marshal. He was also a devoted member of Tornado Apostolic Church. In addition to his mother, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Junie Faye Greene and one brother, Andrew Sammons. Sharden is survived by his loving wife, Nella Dudley Sammons of Tornado, WV; one son, Derek Keith Sammons (fiancé Courtney) of Grayson, KY; one daughter, Denise Sammons of Kermit, WV; two sisters, Deborah Demming of North Royalton, OH and Janet Dingess of Kermit, WV; one brother, Donnie Zirkle (Brenda) of Carroll, OH; grandchildren, Ethan Craig Sammons, Madison Paige Sammons and Brody Keith Sammons; one great-grandson, Carter Sammons and a host of friends, cousins and his all of his Honor Guard friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at the Tornado Apostolic Church, Tornado, WV with Pastor Wilson Hudson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Thursday at the church prior to services. Graveside services with full military honors will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Donel Kinnard State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, WV. Burial will follow.
