On March 14, 2026, Susan DeTemple passed away in Huntington, WV. She was born on October 26, 1947, in Pittsburgh, PA. She attended Southside High School in Hookstown, PA, where she was the class Valedictorian, graduating in 1965. She went on to attend Marshall University, where she earned a BA in Elementary Education and met her husband, Ron DeTemple. Susan taught elementary school for several years and subsequently joined Ron in their family business. Later in life, she honored her family's lineage of caregivers by returning to Marshall University to earn a B.S.N. and worked as a registered nurse. She was married to Ron DeTemple for just shy of 60 years and lovingly raised their two daughters, Jill DeTemple and Karen DeTemple, who are married to Gordon O'Brien and Chris Haegglund, respectively. She is survived by her sister, Karen Eastman; brothers Scott Walker and Bruce Walker; her grandchildren Kate O'Brien and Ali O'Brien; and several nieces and nephews. Susan was a selfless servant to others, always generously offering her talents and nurturing spirit without need for credit or acclaim. She rocked premature babies at the hospital, knitted hats for newborns in the NICU, and sewed whimsical pillowcases for sick children to give them respite from their illness. Her dedication to children extended to advocacy work as a CASA volunteer, and she was honored with the CASA Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002. Susan created a warm and welcoming home for her family and was a respected matriarch embodying love and kindness and was an always-available listener. Following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, she loved quilting and needlework and was celebrated for her thoughtful and clever gift giving and her creative care packages. Susan was a woman of strong faith, finding joy in her Bible study group, and was a cherished friend to many through her quilting and knitting groups, Bunko group, and the Florida Newcomer Club. Susan and Ron had a shared love for following The Herd all over the country and attended all home and away football games for a 17- year period and watched MU win 2 national championships in football and become the winningest football team in America in the 90’s. Susan always felt called to give back — and to give forward — the many blessings she had received. She and Ron donated a home to Habitat for Humanity, and inspired by their shared love of Marshall University athletics, established an endowment with the Big Green Scholarship Foundation. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Big Green Scholarship Foundation in honor of the "Ron and Susan DeTemple Endowed Scholarship for Men's Basketball." The family will receive friends at Henson and Kitchen Mortuary and Cremation Services, 1592 E. Pea Ridge Rd., Huntington, WV 25705 near Barboursville, on Wednesday, March 18th, from 6–8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 545 Norway Ave., Huntington, WV 25705, on Thursday, March 19th, at 10 AM with Fr. Martin Smay officiating.
