Kathleen (Kathy) Marie (Cook) Turner was born on December 10, 1951 in Cleveland, OH to the late Samuel and Rosemary (Eastham) Cook. Kathy grew up in Huntington, WV and graduated from Huntington High School in 1969. Upon graduation, she attended Marshall University, where she graduated in 1973 with a B.A. in Secondary Education: Social Studies/History. Kathy then earned her M.A. in Secondary Education Administration in 1975. While attending Marshall, Kathy was heavily involved with the yearbook, acapella choir, and the Delta Zeta sorority, where she made many life-long friends. Kathy married Stephen W. Turner on Valentine’s Day of 1979. They met at Mark and Janet Ferguson’s wedding, starting their courtship with a first date at Jim’s Spaghetti. When she married Steve, Kathy gained a stepdaughter, Elizabeth D. Turner. Beth blessed them with a marvelous son-in-law, Shawn Osborne, and three amazing grandchildren: Jordan (Banks), Kendal, and Landon. Kathy and Steve were blessed with two sons, Michael and Phillip. Both graduated high school from St. Joseph Central High School in Huntington and both received their degrees from Marshall University. After college, both sons went on to marry very special women. Michael married Rachel (Lister) in 2014. Phillip and Heather (Keeling) married in 2012 and have three children: Abram, Sylvia, and Maisie. Family was very important in Kathy’s life. She loved seeing her children and grandchildren. She also took great joy in traveling to visit her grandchildren and to relax at the beach (where you were guaranteed to see her pursuing one of her favorite past-times, reading). In 1987, Kathy began working at Marshall University as a special education teacher. After leaving that position, Kathy began teaching for Cabell County Schools in 1994; first as a special education teacher at Beverly Hills Middle School, followed by a few years at the old Huntington High School before moving to the new, consolidated Huntington High School. In 2012, Kathy earned her National Board Certification in Social Studies / History. During her teaching career, she enjoyed helping in many extra-curricular activities, such as sponsoring Beta Club and chaperoning student trips to Europe. Kathy retired from Huntington High School in 2018. During retirement, Kathy enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She continued to pursue her favorite hobbies, reading and gardening. She was also a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Marshall University Big Green Foundation, and the Delta Zeta Alumnae. Kathy was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Stephen W. Turner; her parents, Samuel W. Cook and Rosemary R. (Eastham) Cook; her brother, Allen B. Cook; and a special Aunt, Margaret Eastham. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her sister Eugena ‘Jane’ (Mike) Harrison; her sister-in-law, Catherine (Dean) Dippolito; niece Amy (BJ) Belcher; niece Andrea Dippolito; niece Autumn (Greg) Edwards; nephew Kevin Allen (Scott) Harrison; and niece Rebekah (Brian) Posnosnky. A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Henson and Kitchen Mortuary and Cremation Services, 6357 E. Pea Ridge Road, Huntington, WV, near Barboursville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, or the Huntington City Mission.
